Keep, Throw Away, Sell, Donate

We have been told what our moving allowance is – x if by air, y if by sea. It’s sort of like a poem I recall from my childhood. Anyway, most of our allowance will be taken up with Noel’s stuff. His toys, games, and gadgets need to come with us so that he can be comfortable in his new environment. Any kind of change is difficult for indivuals with autism and a change of this magnitude is pretty much overwhelming. So, we are trying to maintain familiarity wherever we can.

Now, my task is to sort the accumulation of our lives to date into keep, throw away, sell, and donate piles. Thankfully, I am not a pack rat. I purge my closets regularly. (Generally, I wait until Brian is away and I go through his closets too. He never even misses what I throw out.) I find that the older I get, the less attached I am to “stuff”. There are a few things though that have sentimental value – mostly gifts that remind me of the giver. KAUST is providing housing that is fully furnished so none of the furniture is coming with us. Between that and the medical/bureaucratic stuff that we need to have taken care of, it will be a busy few weeks.

Today is the first day of classes at KAUST. I am a little envious of those who have been there from the beginning. What an experience, what a story to tell your children and grandchildren.
